Japanese Fire Belly Newt
Order Urodela, Family Salamandridae, Genus Cynops
It is endemic to Japan and is often found in water such as ponds, rice fields, and wetlands, but can also be seen in forest road gutters in mountainous areas. Its back is black and its underside is red with irregular black spots. For this reason, it is also called the red-bellied newt or red-flanked newt. The pattern on the underside varies from individual to individual, which is useful for identifying individuals.
