Magnolia obovata
Magnoliaceae Magnolia
It grows in mountains on deciduous trees of 20 – 30 meters tall. The flowers are yellowish white and usually bloom to 15 cm in diameter, with a strong fragrance. In the rural areas of Hida, there is a regional cuisine called Hoba-miso, using these dead leaves; the leaves are used as a makeshift dish to grill meat or vegetables in Hoba-miso. Meats and veggies are grilled on these dead leaves to get this nice fragrance on foods.
